Remedy to reduce stress – Cortisol present in chewing gum
- Cortisol is produced by the body’s adrenal gland. In times of high stress, cortisol levels in the body spike as the body goes into its “fight or flight” mode.
- When the body is in a relaxed state, the cortisol levels in the body decrease, this ability to measure cortisol levels in the body makes it the perfect type of marker to use in determining the amount of stress a person is experiencing.
- Dr. Scholey’s research concluded that when a person chews gum, at least in the laboratory setting, his cortisol levels decrease.
- The study involved only forty people, a relatively small number of participants from which to extrapolate results to the general population.
- The average age was 22 years old. The testing was done using the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation, which, among other things, is a standardized methodology of measuring stress-related physiological responses in a laboratory setting.
- In the study, the cortisol levels, plus the degree of alertness, were measured before the participants begin to chew gum and again as they were chewing the gum.
So how much effect did chewing gum have on a person’s stress levels?
- The tests showed that those who chewed gum reduced their levels of anxiety by almost 17 percent when under mild stress and by nearly 10 percent when under moderate stress.
- The difference in levels of performance was even more dramatic as the gum chewers performed 67% to 109% better than the non-gum chewers.
- Past researchers have studied the influence of scents on anxiety and stress. This research study, however, did not focus on the type of gum chewed.
- Therefore it is not known whether the flavor of the chewing gum made a difference in the results.
What are the ramifications of this study?
- One likely consequence is that chewing gum manufacturers will be using science to convince people to chew more of their gum. From a consumer standpoint, however, we will have to wait for follow up testing to determine if we all should add chewing gum to our weekly shopping lists.
Chewing Gum Linked to Reduction in Stress
In what sounds like a chewing gum manufacturer’s PR dream, chewing gum has been found to reduce stress and anxiety in people who chew it. For years people have sought various ways to fight stress. Among the most common are cigarette smoking and chewing gum. But, until now, even though many of that chewing gum believed that it helped them to reduce stress, there was no scientific evidence to prove that they were right. Now there is.
- In addition to relieving stress and anxiety, researchers found that people who chew gum also showed an improvement in alertness and in their ability to multitask.
- The study in question was presented by behavioral scientist Andrew Scholey, last year in Tokyo at the 10th International Congress of Behavioral Medicine.

- The intent of the study, which included some researchers from the Wrigley Science Institute, was intended to determine if and how the act of chewing gum affected mood, cortisol levels, and stress.
Chewing gum is the new stressbuster remedy!
- Teachers hate it, which could explain why students feel compelled to chew gum in school.
- Now a replacement study finds that chewing sugarless gum in school or while doing homework may very well improve academic performance in teens by increasing brain attention.
- Earlier add the lab had shown that chewing gum helps reduce stress, relieves anxiety, and improves levels of alertness. This includes benefits in areas like focus, alertness, and concentration, controlling situational stress, managing appetite and weight, also as improving oral health.
- Craig Johnston, Ph.D., a teacher in pediatrics-nutrition at Baylor and his colleagues enlisted 108 eighth grade subjects (52 girls, 56 boys) aged 13 to 16 years in from four secondary school math classes and randomly assigned them to at least one of two groups.
- One group chewed Wrigley’s sugarless gum during school while performing on homework and as they took a true math test. Subjects chewed gum 86% of their time in school, 36% of the time spent doing homework.
- The control group did not chew anything during these same activities.
- The students who chewed gum had a third (small but still statistically significant) increase in their standardized math test (the test was the Texas Assessment of data and Skills) scores after 14 weeks of chewing away as compared to those that had not chewed anything.
- The gum chewers’ final math grades were also “significantly better” than students who were a part of the non-gum-chewing control group.
Impact of the chewing gum remedy for stress
- Educators who have seen the research are impressed. Especially since this is often the primary ever study to be completed during a world school setting with students.
- “Some researchers speculate that a decreased level of stress results in better focus and concentration, which can explain the connection between gum chewing and increased focus and concentration,” Johnston explains.
- He adds that the study “demonstrates the potential benefits of chewing gum on academic performance during a real-life, classroom setting with teenagers.”
- Of course, more work is required to ascertain if gum chewing has an equivalent effect on other subjects like English or World Geography, for instance. it is also challenging to inform if the improved math grades and testing scores were results of the gum being chewed or if any eating or another movement would have had an equivalent impact.
- Other experts, who have not any ties to work, claim that the chewing gum may reduce stress, and this makes concentrating easier. That improved concentration is what allows for enhanced academic performance.
- At the very least, the unique study on the link with brain attention gives parents (and teachers) something to chew on.
Hence it is proven that chewing gum is the best remedy to reduce stress and improve brain function!
